Notion is already the productivity app of choice for most serious freelancers. The question is whether paying extra for Notion AI is worth it — or whether you should just keep a separate AI tool open in another tab.
After three months using it daily across client projects, invoicing, and content creation, here's the real answer.
What Notion AI Actually Does
Notion AI is baked directly into your workspace. Highlight any text and it can:
- Summarize long documents
- Fix grammar and improve tone
- Translate content
- Turn bullet points into prose (and vice versa)
- Draft new content from a brief
- Extract action items from meeting notes
The key difference from standalone AI tools: it knows your context. Because it lives inside your notes, it can reference your existing docs, client briefs, and project details without you copying and pasting everything.
What's Actually Good
Meeting notes → action items in seconds
I dump messy meeting notes in and ask Notion AI to extract action items grouped by person. What used to take 15 minutes takes 30 seconds. This alone is worth the price for most freelancers.
The Q&A feature is underrated
You can ask Notion AI questions about your entire workspace: "What did I promise to deliver to Acme Corp by Friday?" or "Summarize everything I know about this client." It searches your notes and synthesizes an answer. Think of it as a second brain that actually answers questions.
Writing drafts inside your project
When I'm writing a proposal, I can ask it to draft specific sections without switching apps. The context awareness means it picks up client names, project details, and tone from the surrounding document.
What's Disappointing
Writing quality is average
Compared to Jasper or Claude, Notion AI's raw writing quality is mediocre. It's fine for internal notes and first drafts but you wouldn't send the output directly to a client.
It doesn't have the web
Notion AI has no internet access. You can't ask it to research a topic or check current information.
Pricing adds up
Notion AI is $10/mo per member on top of your existing Notion plan. If you're on Notion Plus ($16/mo), you're at $26/mo total — for functionality that's arguably less powerful than Claude at $20/mo.
The Verdict
Worth it if: You're already a heavy Notion user and want AI baked into your existing workflow. The context awareness and Q&A features genuinely save time.
Skip it if: You primarily need AI for writing client deliverables. You'll get better output from Jasper or Claude at a similar price.
The honest recommendation: Use Notion for project management (it's excellent) and a dedicated AI writing tool for client deliverables. The combo beats Notion AI alone.
